Friday plant sale/fundraiser features flora tended by local FFA students

The Mineral Wells High School FFA youth have been working hard to ready plants for their annual plant sale, which takes place at the high school greenhouse, Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and features all types of plants, tended to and nurtured by students.

This is a good time to not only get plants to help beautify the yard, but also help students. Proceeds of the plant sale go into the local FFA chapter activity fund, which goes toward travel expenses and chapter activities.

This school year, MWFFA boasts a roster of 330 students. Students have either started their sale items from seeds, cuttings or from a smaller rooting, and have spent time growing them into healthy plants, said FFA sponsor and MWHS Agricultural Science Instructor Laura Horner.

She said these include annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, vegetable plants and mixed plantings in terracotta pots, all at reasonable prices.

Horner changed things up a little this year and assigned students to specific tables and told them their grade depended on how well the plants thrived.

She said it worked, noting, “The plants look great and are ready to go to good homes.”

In addition to the plant sale, students are having a silent auction for five chairs they have hand painted and made into planters. Bidding on a chair begins at $40, but Horner advises bidders come early.

The sale takes place at the greenhouse behind the high school, located at 3801 Ram Boulevard in Mineral Wells.
