The vast majority of Americans are very blessed to be able to put food on their tables every day with little worry. When the average person proclaims they are “starving,” an affordable, filling meal is never that far away or hard to come by. But though most people eat their fill each day, there are still thousands in America who go hungry.
In celebration of their 10th anniversary, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop set out to do what they could to help this problem, partnering with Share Our Strength’s Dine Out For No Kid Hungry campaign to feed less fortunate kids nationwide. And according to a press release, on Aug. 12, the local restaurant chain reached their goal, raising $75,000 to provide free meals for 750,000 kids in need.
“This was the first time we’ve done a system-wide fundraising campaign like this, and it was our first year to support Share Our Strength; so we really didn’t know what to expect,” Fuzzy’s Chief Executive Chuck Bush said. “I’m really thrilled the initiative was such a success, and I can’t thank our franchisees, our corporate team and, most of all, our awe some customers enough for supporting our effort. What a great way to help put an end to childhood hunger in America.”
Throughout July, customers at more than 65 Fuzzy’s locations in 11 states, including the downtown Mineral Wells location, were encouraged to make a $1 donation to help feed these kids and, in return, were given a voucher for a free taco. Each dollar raised provided meals to 10 kids, so as donations added up, so did the number of kids Fuzzy’s could help feed.
The campaign also extended to social media. For every Fuzzy’s-themed Vine video or Tweet with the hashtag “#Fuzzys4NoKidHungry,” an additional 10 kids received meals.
“You don’t realize how far a dollar goes in this, but that’s pretty amazing,” Bush said in an interview with the Index. “[Hungry kids] are everywhere, in every neighborhood. It’s across the nation in every ethnicity and economic level across the board. If a kid needs something, we’re going to do what we can to help, as far as Fuzzy’s goes.”
“We’re excited,” Mineral Wells franchise owner Will Tate said. “Anytime we can help kids, that’s what it’s all about. We Just love giving back.”
Fuzzy’s Euless location raised the most customer donations, generating more than $4,200 to feed 42,000 kids. In all, 17 stores collected more than $1,000 each to give to No Kid Hungry and help the cause.
A Fuzzy’s representative said the chain does not have plans for any more big fundraising campaigns in the immediate future, but he did mention that they would be offering $1 tacos all day in celebration of National Taco Day on Oct. 2.
As for Fuzzy’s 10th birthday, the decision to give rather than receive was a meaningful one, one that should have a lasting impact, especially on the kids fed through the promotion.
