PPGH’s Holt named to D/FW Great 100 nurses

Carolyn Holt, Director of Women Services at Palo Pinto General Hospital, has been honored as one of the D/FW Great 100 nurses.

Since 1991, the mission of the D/FW Great 100 is to recognize registered nurses for their contribution to the communities in which they live and practice both the art and science of nursing. The event honors 100 RNs who were nominated by their peers and selected for being role models, leaders, community servants, compassionate caregivers and significant contributors to the nursing profession.

The 2014 Great 100 Nurses were selected from more than 700 nominations submitted.

“I can’t think of anyone who deserves this prestigious award more,” said PPGH Chief Executive Officer Harris Brooks.

In 1972, this young valedictorian received her nursing degree and knew exactly what she wanted to do – babies. Babies were her thing.

“Holt has been an amazing nurse, manager and teacher in the field of women’s services,” said Diane Brown, PPGH director of Volunteer Services and Foundation. “She is a role model to any nurse entering not only women’s services but the nursing profession.”

As a manager, Holt still works in labor and delivery, postpartum and the nursery alongside her nurses.

“She never asks her staff to do something she is not willing to do herself and they follow her lead to do whatever is necessary,” Brown said. “She is professional and her first priority is always the mamas and babies.”

Brown said Holt is also known for her compassion.

“How can anyone not have compassion in the maternity unit?” said Brown. “Compassion is a day-to-day responsibility for this nurse. She has frequently had to notify child protective services to assure the safety of an infant born into a dangerous environment. As this manager finishes one process improvement, she initiates another and has done so for years. She is no less than awesome. She is truly great.”

The 2014 D/FW Great Nurses celebration is May 14 at the Morton H. Myerson Symphony center.
