Rugged Cross

Landmark hilltop cross on town’s eastern edge getting much-needed facelift

Special to the Index

“On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suff’ring and shame.”

Evangelist and song-leader George Bennard penned this familiar old hymn in 1912. And on a roadside near Reed City, Mich., stands a 12-foot wooden cross in his memory.

On a hill not so far away, Mineral Wells has an old rugged cross of its own. This cross was built and raised by Leon and Evelyn Wiggins in October 1986. Since that time, the Wiggins have moved out of the area but their love for God is still on display for local residents and passersby to see.

Now 28 years old, the cross is in disrepair and in need of a little love itself. Later this month, it will get the care and attention it needs from a team of local pastors and volunteers lead by Bill Hudson, pastor of Midpoint Chapel in Millsap.

“The restoration of the cross is  a physical symbol of the revival that is taking place in the body of Christ in this area,” Hudson said.

For the better part of a day, the cross will disappear from view as it is lowered and the wood surface replaced with metal. In addition to a new exterior, the cross will get new and better lighting.

The Ministerial Alliance has decided to not only restore the cross, but will serve together as guardians to ensure its continued care. All who cherish this old rugged cross will see it emerge as a symbol of unity among the churches and hope for the city of Mineral Wells.

“The [restored] cross will be a constant reminder of what wonderful things happen when God’s people come together to do something that glorifies Christ Jesus,” said Hudson’s wife, Sharron.

Anyone who would like to donate to help restore and maintain the cross may send a tax-deductible donation to: PULSE Ministries Inc, P.O. Box 121, Mineral Wells, TX 76068. Attach a note indicating that the donation is for the cross.
