Friend-to-Friend Party: Detecting, preventing female cancer aim of event

By TYLER MASK

Ever since the 1980s, when Susan G. Komen was founded by its CEO Nancy Brinker, the world of breast cancer and its victims has drastically changed.

In fact, breast cancer has gone from obscurity to being one of the most well-known forms of cancer in the world.

In recent years, cervical cancer awareness has also begun to grow. From general awareness to modern medical treatments, people from across the globe are banding together to put these beasts in the grave.

Friend-to-Friend party, a free event hosted by Palo Pinto General Hospital and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Palo Pinto County, along with the support of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, the Moncrief Cancer Institute and other local sponsors, is slated for May 15, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at First Christian Church in Mineral Wells. Women of all ages are invited to attend.

The purpose of the event is to promote mammograms and Pap tests and encourage women to receive regular screenings in order to detect breast and/or cervical cancer early on. The earlier the detection, the easier cancer is to treat.

“Our goal is to reach out to women in Palo Pinto County to make them aware of how important it is to follow the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for cancer screening,” County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Lynette Babcock said.

During the party, exhibits, vendors, food and door prizes will comprise the fun. But the true highlight of the event will be the information women receive. Amidst all the free knowledge on screenings and testings, information on financial services that are available locally will be provided to those in need.

“We want this to be a fun evening and encourage women to bring a friend,” Babcock said. “It’s easier to make an appointment when you have a friend who is there to encourage you.”

To register, call 940-659-1228. Individuals who pre-register by May 12 are eligible for a special $50 gift card drawing. In addition to the drawing, there will be various door prizes including three $50 gift cards and one $150 gift card.
