The local Petsense store, which has been instrumental in hosting pet adoptions since it opened in November 2007, is going out of business, according to general manager Karon Corner.

Referring to an event set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., she said, "I honestly don't know if it will be the last adoption."

She said inventory is already being sold off, including animals from the city shelter.

"We've stopped receiving city animals," she said. "We have one city cat left now because we were paying for vaccinations and I wanted to clear the books before we close."

A number of factors contributed to lagging sales, Corner explained, though the location has always been a powerhouse in finding pets loving homes through regular adoptions.

"We've adopted out 1,555 animals," she said. "When this last kitty cat goes, we'll be up to 1,556. We're number three in adoptions for the company."

In a community without Petsense, Corner said she hopes another business will carry on the local adoptions.

"Hopefully another retailer in town will step up and allow them to do adoptions and so forth in another retail outlet," she said.

Corner said the last business day has not been determined, noting, "It will be the end of May, but I haven't been told an exact date."

A going-out-of-business sale will begin April 27, she explained, adding prices will be reduced by 40 percent.
