The Palo Pinto County Disaster Relief Team invites individuals interested in joining to take part in a training session this week.
According to team coordinator Cindy Maness, volunteers are trained through Texas Baptist Men’s Yellow Cap program. This training will take place Friday, from 5:30 p.m. until approximately 9 p.m., at Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Participants must provide $10 to cover the cost of a background check and a meal will be provided at the beginning of the session. Those interested in taking part can reserve a spot, by calling Maness at (940) 452-8990.
County commissioners voted to recognize the recently established disaster team as a liaison for Emergency Management Coordinator Buddy Harwell during a session last month.
Maness explained the importance of providing a central source of emergency response within the county.
“We work in conjunction with the county fire marshal,” she told commissioners, explaining previous well-intentioned efforts were often redundant as numerous volunteers visited the same local businesses on behalf of disparate organizations.
With the recognition of commissioners, she said, “We can go to businesses and say we’re the ones to deal with.”
Harwell said the centralized response effort is “working better each time” it is implemented.
The team recently organized the collection of bottled water for Strawn when the town’s water system was blocked.
