Dr. Haterius comes on as Mineral Wells ISD’s first female superintendent

— In May, after a multi-month search, Mineral Wells ISD hired Gail Haterius as the district’ first female superintendent.

What stood out for MWISD Board President Joe Ruelas was the range of experiences Haterius had in districts with similar socioeconomic demographics to MWIS, as well as her experiences in almost all the public school faculty and administrative roles.

“She’s walked in all the shoes from [teaching] kindergarten to 12th grade. Some people take the fast track in becoming a superintendent. She’s taken the time to get there and values the positions she’s held,” he told the Index.

Trustee Maria Jones said she liked Haterius’ “exuberance and passion for education.”

When she came to work in July, Haterius interviewed all the administrators. Afterwards, she performed what appeared a musical chairs – promoting former principal Jay Walsworth to assistant superintendent and shifting around other principals and assistant principals to give them new experiences and fill the gaps left by several retirements.

Haterius has stressed and has made strides to focus on directing students to be “college, career and life ready. Because I think in this 21st Century we’ve got to give our children choices so they can choose what career path they want to go in.”

“I hope the school and business community can work together to find internships and job opportunities for Mineral Wells High School students or graduates so they stay here,” she told the Index.
