The Palo Pinto County Livestock Expo building was full of freshly trimmed and well-blanketed sheep and goats Wednesday in preparation for showing later in the afternoon. Palo Pinto County Livestock Show organizers estimated having close to 60 goats and 35 sheep. Shortly after 1:30 p.m., the heaviest animal, a medium wool sheep, weighed in at 149 pounds.

Many of the animals were 1 year old and younger. Suzanne Taff, the mother of Graford ninth-grader Patrick Taff, said her son's Boer goat was 82 pounds.

“He's right on,” she said of the weight, explaining that these goats had to be between 70 pounds to 100 pounds.

Patrick Taff said he purchased the goat in September at a ranch near Lampassas. Like the many other county youth, he spent the past months making sure his animal was not only the right weight but in perfect condition.

Agricultural Science teacher and FFA Sponsor Laura Horner said Mineral Wells High School has about 50 students who will be showing pigs, goats, rabbits and steers over the course of the four-day stock show.
