The local observance of an event honoring individuals injured or killed while cycling will take an even more somber tone this year in light of two local cyclists killed since the last ride.

Iris Stagner, who organized the Ride of Silence for the past several years, was killed while riding her bike along U.S. Highway 180 West after a vehicle struck her.

“Iris did it for the last five years,” said local cycling enthusiast Neil Reddick of the Ride of Silence. “Every year we had it Iris organized it.”

Another local, David Valtier, was hit and killed by a motorist as he cycled home from work last July.

Reddick is organizing this year’s ride, which will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Palo Pinto General Hospital.

He said this is the tenth annual ride, noting the yearly event was initially established in memory of Dallas-area cyclist Larry Schwartz.

The route will take riders from the hospital to Mesquite Pit and back again, he said. The ride is completed in complete silence. Reddick noted a slow pace and short travel distance makes the ride appropriate for cyclists of all experience levels.

Helmets are required to participate, but anyone interested is welcome and encouraged to ride. He said riders should gather at PPGH at least 30 minutes prior to starting time.
