Chamber, MWISD, area businesses build future workforce

Students reaped the benefits of a community-school program that brought several county employers to Mineral Wells High School, allowing students to fill out applications for actual positions.

The Workforce Development and Education Committee, organized by the Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce, works to “develop the workforce from within the community to feed the community businesses,” according to Susan Boyd, job fair coordinator and workforce development and education committee liaison for the chamber.

“This is their project for us to do as a partnership,” added MWHS GO Center’s Kim Ortiz. “Susan asked and recruited her businesses to come and then we asked our stduents to sign up. And then, through our career and tech classes and through the GO Center they were able to design a resume they brought with them and we did some hands-on information on how to prepare for a job interview and how to fill out applications.

“We got very positive feedback,” said Boyd. “One said this was the most productive job fair she has been to and it’s her seventh job fair.”

“We had 10th, 11th and 12th graders participate,” Ortiz noted.

“Ones who are actively looking for either a co-op position or job,” added Boyd.

The job fair included six employers – PECOFacet, Ram Country, Titan Bank, Cobham Avionics, The Cliffs and Walmart.

Unlike the fall career fair, where more businesses participate in educating students about jobs and careers, chamber Director Beth Watson said that Wednesday’s partnering businesses had to have a co-op position or a job available for students to participate.

“This has been the most productive job fair,” said Sonya Hitch, human resources administrator for The Cliffs. She estimated having 50 interested students who submitted job applications, which she said, “Is a really good turnout.”

Hitch said The Cliffs has about 10 to 12 positions open and employees a total of 140 staff. She said she hopes to fill all ares, which include basic maintenance – grounds and buildings – lodging, marina and restaurant.

Similarly, other partner businesses had positions to fill for students who wanted to work part time or full time, as either an entryway to a career or a summer position.
