A number of area animal advocacy groups will converge Saturday for the last adoption event at the Mineral Wells Petsense store.

The retailer, located at 927 Farm-to-Market Road 1821 N., announced earlier this year it is going out of business and Sunday will mark its last day in operation.

Sherry Seabolt of the Palo Pinto County Humane Society said Saturday’s event will be a “last hurrah,” allowing locals to show appreciation for the store and its manager, Karen Corner.

“Some of her old customers we’re wanting to get up there and tell them goodbye,” Seabolt said, adding the adoption will be in honor of Corner’s commitment to finding displaced animals a loving home.

“Karen knows we’re having the adoption but she doesn’t know it’s in her honor,” she noted.

Since opening in November 2007, the local retailer has helped facilitate nearly 1,600 pet adoptions. Seabolt hopes the final event will result in a great turnout.

“We’re going to have dogs and puppies, cats and kittens,” she explained.

“Corner said there won’t be much business because [the store is] already cleaned out,” Seabolt said, adding she feels loyal customers and animal lovers alike will show up.

In addition to her agency, Seabolt said the Young County Humane Society, Community Animal Rescue Effort, or CARE, and Animal Angel Rescue will bring animals to the adoption. Saturday’s event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Seabolt said there is still a need for an area business to fill the void left by Petsense’s closing. She said she hopes to find a partnering retailer interested in carrying on the tradition of helping area animals.
