Them’s fightin’ words

MWPD handles high number of assaults last week

By CLINT FOSTER

Over the past week, the Mineral Wells Police Department responded to at least 13 assaults and fights across town of varying degrees and types: anywhere from simple assaults to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

And as usually seems to be the case with crime and police work, these incidents ranged from the serious to the flat out bizarre. Perhaps the most bizarre occurred around 11 a.m. on Nov. 20.

MWPD responded to a morning assault call in the 800 block of SW 4th Avenue to find a woman who had been headbutted by her ex-boyfriend.

Police said the 43-year-old ex-boyfriend, who was fresh out of jail for assault, showed up at the victim’s home that morning and began kicking the grill of her 1987 four-door Chrysler sedan.

When the woman went outside to tell him to stop, police said the offender proceeded to head butt her and run away. MWPD has the man’s name and the case has been assigned.

Also on Nov. 20, MWPD dealt with an incident involving a man that was literally stabbed in the back between 9:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. Police pulled up to a home in the 900 block of NE 4th Avenue where the 53-year-old victim told them his brother stabbed him in the upper-right of his back after an altercation.

An arrest is pending in this case as well, according to a police spokesperson.

Another unorthodox assault happened the next day around 9:30 p.m. in the front seat of a moving vehicle.

This “rolling assault,” as police call it, took place in the 700 block of NW 1st Avenue.

A man, whom the MWPD are quite familiar with from multiple recent arrests, was in the passenger seat with a woman, possibly his girlfriend, driving.

Police said the two got into a fight and the man began to strike the woman multiple times in the head – not typical behavior to promote safe driving.
