Penny by penny

Local United Way holds Penny Auction Saturday

An assortment of highly sought after goods, merchandise and services from local businesses could soon belong to citizens, for literally pennies on the dollar – that is for those who attend the United Way of Palo Pinto County’s third annual Penny Auction fundraiser.

The event, which raises as much fun as funds, takes place Saturday evening in the Mineral Wells Junior High gym, 1301 S.E. 14th Ave. Doors to the school open at 5 p.m. and the auction begins at 6 p.m.

Participants can bring their own pennies or buy them at the auction – there will be plenty.

Young or old, this auction is geared for all ages and it’s a great way to use up those spare pennies.

Items for auction will be donated by local merchants and citizens.

“There will be concessions available and it will be a good time for the whole family to come out and hopefully win some prizes,” said UWPPC Executive Director Marily Blair. “Plus all the money goes to a good cause.”

“All the money raised by United Way of Palo Pinto County stays in Palo Pinto County,” she noted.

Don’t know how to play? Don’t worry, veteran players and organizers – with two years under their belts – will teach newcomers.

Players will purchase as many numbered cups as they wish for $1 each. Each cup will contain a corresponding numbered ping-pong ball, which goes into a hopper.

Prior to the auction, the “penny value” of all merchant-donated items will be assessed. To bid on a prize, place the designated number of pennies in one or more of your cups. If your cup number is drawn and your cup contains the assigned penny value, you win.

However, if a number is called and there is no money in the cup, then another number is called, and repeatedly so, until a winner is found.
