Lubbock woman missing after day of boating at PK Lake

BRA searching, disappearance resulted in cancellation of Hell's Gate fireworks

By LIBBY CLUETT

POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE – According to Palo Pinto County Sheriff Ira Mercer, a 27 year-old woman from Lubbock went missing Saturday while boating at Possum Kingdom Lake and, as of Sunday morning, she has not been found.

“We don’t know exactly what we have going on yet,” Mercer said, adding that the woman was in the vicinity of Hell’s Gate.

Mercer said this is the Brazos River Authority’s jurisdiction and his officers are currently assisting, as needed.

“The BRA started investigating and asked us to help,” Mercer said. “[The woman was] last seen on a boat, but was off and on [the boat] all day, swimming.”

Mercer said this disappearance apparently resulted in cancelling the Hell’s Gate firework’s show Saturday night.

“They removed all boats in area,” he noted, but had no more details on the cancellation, since the BRA, which oversees the lake, made the call.

As of Sunday morning, Mercer said the BRA is “looking for her. I told them anything they need [from the sheriff’s office] is fine.”

“Right now it’s the BRA’s case and we have some officers up there to help them,” he said, adding that his office and will assume duties if this is later deemed a criminal case.

From previous Index reports, the Hell’s Gate area is as much as 80-to-100-feet deep, possibly deeper. Since the beginning of last summer, three individuals have drowned in PK Lake and, including a fisherman in Lake Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto County has seen four drowning deaths.

Currently this is a missing person. The Index will follow up as it receives more information.
