A family that last week lost its Siberian husky will soon have another in its place.

Jim Vines, commander of AmVets Post 133 in Mineral Wells, said the organization went right to work to find a replacement husky for Army veteran Ty Thomas, who said he suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and said the 4-year-old dog was a special comfort to him.

“This is what we do,” said Vines. “We take care of each other.”

The husky, named “Bubba,” and another family dog, a German shepherd, escaped last week from the family’s yard on S.E. 18th Street. They were found roaming the streets in the area of the 1300 block of S.W. 13th Street, where a family tried to hold them until the owners could be found.

But the dogs reportedly got loose from that residence and were found a short distance away by a man returning home, just outside the city limits, who reportedly saw them chasing and attacking his goats. Having recently lost some goats to either coyotes or wild dogs, the man shot the husky, killing it. The German shepherd ran off but was captured and taken to the city/county animal shelter where it was claimed by Thomas and his family.

Neither dog was collared nor had identification, according to the family that found them.

Thomas said he served nine years in the Army that included two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. He said the loss of the family husky also deeply affected his 6-year-old daughter.

But the good news is that the family will soon have a new husky. Vines said the AmVets group contacted a Metroplex breeder and found a litter of husky puppies about 4 weeks old. They will soon be weened from their mother, and Thomas and his family should have their new husky home before Christmas.

The one difference is the family decided on a red husky, not a grey and white one like Bubba, since they felt one with similar colors and markings would remind them too much of Bubba.
