Area churches, QXFM team up for 'Bikes for Kids'

Mineral Wells Index

— QXFM Radio Network has been bringing “The 12 Days of Christmas” this year, in collaboration with churches in Parker and Palo Pinto counties.

In a shift from traditional holiday radio programming (24/7 Christmas music in the weeks leading up to the big day) QXFM imagined a different style of holiday format, one where community churches would bring an hour of programming to the listener base.

As QXFM brought this idea to the churches, the excitement was palpable. Over the course of the two weeks leading into Christmas, QXFM and these churches are bringing hours of programming that includes:

• Read aloud children's holiday stories, inspirational messages that convey the true meaning of the holidays.

• Holiday sermon excerpts, traditional Christmas carols, choir-sung Christmas songs, and the more common Christmas music in a variety of formats (country, rock, classical, kid's, etc.)

Through Dec. 24, from 5-6 p.m. (2-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday), a sponsored hour plays, all with different content, something for everyone. Starting at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, each of the hours for the 12 days will play back to back; giving us 24 hours of unique Christmas programming that will play all day Christmas. Imagine driving to your grandparent's house and not just having to listen to Rudolf and Jingle Bells!

That was just the tip of the iceberg for the 12 Days of Christmas. QXFM decided that all proceeds would be donated to a charity that operates in our listening area. CASA of Parker County (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) would be such a charity.

As QXFM was searching for a holiday cause that would truly impact those who needed it, CASA at the same time was wondering how they would tell their children that only two bikes, one girls one boys, were donated this year and that a special raffle would decide who they would go to.

A disappointment was sure to ensue for those not selected in the raffle. Hearing this, QXFM immediately got the details from CASA Director Barb Tucker and a plan was set in motion to make sure Christmas for every child at CASA would be a good one. “Bikes for Kids” was born.

With the money raised through The 12 Days of Christmas, from the community churches, QXFM set out to find additional partners to make "Bikes for Kids" a huge success. With the gracious partnerships of The Evening Lion's Club of Weatherford, Weatherford Regional Medical Center, Wally Wallace (Wallace Insurance Agency) and Wal-Mart of Weatherford, more than $1,200 dollars has been raised to donate bicycles and helmets for the children of CASA.

"It is an absolute joy to be able to give back to our communities, especially when that giving has the ability to put smiles on the faces of children that have already been through so many struggles. Hopefully as they unwrap these gifts on Christmas Day, the trials of life will seem small when compared to the joy of their first real bicycle,” said Robert Ashford, director of operations for QXFM Radio Network.

QXFM thanked organizations and individuals that made the Bikes for Kids program  12 Days of Christmas possible:

• Churches – Mineral Wells Church of God, North Side Baptist, New River (Fellowship), Central Christian Church, First Christian Mineral Wells, Southside Church of Christ Mineral Wells, First Methodist of Gordon and Brazos Trails Cowboy Church.

• Organizations – The Evening Lion's Club of Weatherford, Weatherford Regional Medical Center, Wallace Insurance Agency (Wally Wallace), Wal-Mart of Weatherford and CSSI.
