VETERANS’ CORNER: Group giving veterans something to smile about

By JIM VINES

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is promoting a unique opportunity for military members and veterans to improve their smile and achieve good oral health.

This venture is being done through “The Smile Story Contest,” offering the chance to win a smile makeover from an AACD member dentist.

Now through June 10, entrants may submit their own “smile story” and a photo to www.yoursmilebecomesyou.com explaining why they deserve a new smile. After the stories are collected, the public will vote for their favorite smile stories from June 11 to June 30. Up to five lucky grand prize winners will be selected by a panel of dental professionals. The grand prize winners will be announced in September through AACD’s Facebook page. Residents of the U.S. and Canada are eligible to participate, winners receiving a smile makeover, valued at $20,000 each.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is the world’s largest non-profit member organization dedicated to advancing excellence in comprehensive oral care that combines art and science to optimally improve dental health, esthetics, and function. Comprised of more than 6,600 cosmetic dental professionals in 80 countries worldwide, the AACD fulfills its mission by offering superior educational opportunities and providing accurate and useful information to the public and the profession.

Get your “smile stories” in as soon as possible and good luck.

Run For the Wall

Run For the Wall began its three-route journey from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., on May 14, headed to Washington D.C., and all groups will join back together in Arlington, Va., on May 23. The RTW riders journey will take them through VA medical centers, veterans’ memorials, veterans’ outreach facilities, veterans organizations and community centers as well as schools along the routes.

RFTW mission statement is to promote healing among all veterans, their families and friends, while calling for the accounting of all prisoners of war and those missing in action (POW/MIA), to honor all those killed in action (KIA) from all wars and to support military personnel all over the world.

The RFTW will guide the participants across America and eventually participate with Rolling Thunder, supporting the demand for government accountability for POWs/MIAs.

Go to www.rftw.org for specific information regarding registration and participation.

Speak to you again next week.

Jim Vines is commander of AmVets Post 133 in Mineral Wells.
