2 females shot, killed

Family members seek answers in double-homicide

Two women died Thursday morning from injuries sustained following what neighbors described as multiple gunshots.

"At approximately 4:38 a.m., the Mineral Wells Police Department received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a shooting in the 1900 block of S.E. 21st Avenue," said Interim Police Chief Scott Mitcham.

In addition to police, Mineral Wells Fire/EMS personnel were the first to report to the scene, he said.

"Upon arrival, it was determined there were two female victims," Mitcham said. "One victim, who was identified as Magda Karina Hernandez-Medina, 22 years old, was observed with obvious head injuries and was flown by air ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital" in Fort Worth, Mitcham said.

She was pronounced dead on arrival, he confirmed.

"The other female was identified as Brenda Daniela Baker, 23 years of age, who was observed with obvious head injuries and pronounced deceased at the scene," Mitcham added.

The women were shot while still inside a vehicle after arriving at the residence.

"We do not think this was a random incident," Mitcham said.

He said MWPD officers are working with the Palo Pinto County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers in the investigation.

Mitcham said Thursday afternoon the agencies were conducting multiple interviews, noting any additional information would not be released at that time to maintain the integrity of the investigation.

Two individuals staying in the residence across the street said they were awakened "between 4:30 and 5" Thursday morning by the sound of gunfire.

Lacey Poe said she heard about four distinct shots, adding she "didn't want to look outside because ... I heard gunshots and that's not normal around here."

The extended family of one victim stayed at the home throughout the day Thursday, though Ever Flores stated they knew very little about the events of that morning.

The family doesn't "know anything right now because the cops didn't let us come in, and right now [police] are talking to them," said Flores, Hernandez-Medina's cousin.

He said he did not know Baker, but could not think of anyone who would want to harm his cousin.

No one home when the shooting took place was still at the residence late that afternoon, he said.

"They're all at the police station right now," Flores stated.

Smartphones need kill switches. It's a relatively easy solution to the pricey (and irritating) problem of smartphone theft. But who would have thought that the big carriers would team up with Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung and lots of other manufacturers to voluntarily begin adding the technology by July 2015? The cooperative spirit! It makes so much sense!
