Leroy Moreno wants this community to know who his stepfather, David Valtier, really was.

During the past several days, Mineral Wells residents have learned about the hit-and-run driver who collided with Valtier, 60, of Mineral Wells, early Wednesday morning.

Valtier, who was riding home from his job at Antelope Oil Tool and Manufacturing, died at the scene. The suspected driver, Thomas Ray Johnson, 27, of Mineral Wells, was arrested Wednesday evening.

Moreno said Valtier was more than the victim of an inattentive driver’s mistake.

“He was a good man, a good father and a good husband to my mom,” he said, explaining Valtier accepted his mother and her eight children into his life with open arms.

“My dad ... always provided for us. It didn’t matter if he had a car or not,” he said. “He rode his bike to Antelope for eight years.”
