SAN ANGELO — Republican candidate for Congress Lt. Col. August Pfluger on Wednesday picked up the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

The president on Twitter wrote: "@AugustPfluger is a Great Veteran and Strong Leader for Texas where he is running for Congress. He will protect your #2A, fight for our Farmers, Oil/Gas Workers, and he supports our #MAGA & #KAG Agenda. August has my Complete and Total Endorsement!"

Pfluger, of San Angelo, is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a fighter pilot with more than 300 hours of direct combat missions fighting terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Pfluger has also served on Trump’s National Security Council staff.

In a statement, Pfluger said he was " grateful and humbled" by the president's endorsement.

“I look forward to supporting him, and his America First agenda, when I’m elected to Congress,” Pfluger stated. “Working for President Trump is what first inspired me to run for Congress … I saw what he was doing, and I wanted to help him defend our values and fight for the future of our country. I’m just incredibly grateful and humbled by his support.”

Pfluger is running for the Texas Congressional District 11 seat, which includes Palo Pinto County, on the March 3 GOP primary ballot. Early voting begins Feb. 18.
