A total of 23 Mineral Wells soccer players were selected for All-District 6-4A honors, including Julian Avila being selected the league Midfielder MVP and Miguel Hidalgo being named the MVP Goalkeeper.
The Rams landed Diego Andrade, Cristian Narvaez and Keagan Green on the first-team All-District roster and Hannah Seaton and Alexia Rodriquez are first-team selections for the Lady Rams.
Minerals Wells also had three players make the Academic All-State teams for THSCA and TASCO with the selections of Jessie Ishmael, Kishan Patel, Kieren Davis to both of the organization’s teams.
Coach Rolando Borjon shared his thoughts about this year’s honorees.
Julian Avila, the District 6-4A Midfielder MVP, finishes in league play with three goals and four assists. He has excellent foot skills with the ball. He has the vision on the field, and it has allowed him to feed the ball to his teammates.
Amongst district midfield opponents, he is the one that stands out the most because he possesses a lot of skills. His set pieces and long-range shots are pristine and dangerous. Overall for the season, he had 12 goals and 11 assists.
For his four years as a Ram, he turns in 23 goals and 28 assists. Julian was the playmaker in the midfield for us, and he created a lot of offense. He is working on taking his abilities to play in college somewhere. We will definitely miss him next year!
Miguel Hidalgo’s selection as the district’s Goalkeeper MVP doesn’t come as a shocker. He received the same accolade as a freshman. In district play this year, he turned in 28 saves, 3 PK’s saves, three wins, two losses, two shutouts. Overall for the season, he finished with 101 saves, eight shutouts for the season.
Miguel has come big for us in critical games. His awareness and quick reflexes in the goal box are phenomenal. He has made some out of nowhere saves that are jaw-dropping! We are happy to have him one more year next year and expecting big things from him!
We are happy and proud of the number of Lady Rams and Rams that were recognized by District 6-4A coaches. We have been in this district for the past six years, and it has been one of the toughest in Region 1. For these girls and boys to receive this number of selections shows how great our soccer kids are amongst the competition.
On the Lady Rams this year, we started nine new faces from last year’s squad. We will return ten starters next year, so, with new realignment, we end up in the same district plus adding Graham.
The number of starters returning will be something to be excited about, and I do not doubt in my mind that we will be in a better position next year. I have confidence and belief in the girls that they can make a run in the playoffs. We will have more experience and more confidence.
For the Rams, this group was also well represented. We came up short in repeating being district champs, but I know next year we will have the Rams hungry.
We also return 9-10 experienced starters next year, including Marvin Renteria, that was out all season. These incoming seniors will be hoping to make a deep run. We will have to fill Julian’s, Kishan’s, and Jose’s shoes next year, but we have several kids that will be up for the challenge.
I’m excited about both groups next year! We can make history. Watch out 2021!
