The Lady Rams volleyball season got started Thursday at 9 a.m. as players reported for preseason workouts and their first scrimmages looming Saturday and Tuesday.

Coach Sheridan Willard is in her second season leading the Lady Rams and Thursday she was busy making notes and carefully observing the 40 players on the court.

“Everyone who showed up today has also been showing up to summer workouts,” Willard said. “It’s great to see the dedication these girls have.”

Mineral Wells is going to need more than dedication in the 2019 volleyball season as they prepare for District 7-4A play and league foes Stephenville, Glen Rose, Godley and Brownwood.

Glen Rose and Stephenville were the league frontrunners last year and are probably flip-flopped for the one-two spots this year. The Lady Rams are long on talent and confidence this year, but they are also short on experience.

The Lady Rams will scrimmage against Breckenridge Saturday and then have a tri-match scrimmage Tuesday with Millsap and Saginaw starting at 2 p.m. with the junior varsity and the varsity at 3:15 p.m.

“We are about where I expected us to be when it comes to the number of players we have coming out to play,” Willard said.

It’s still a little early to determine how Willard thinks her team will play without having played against other teams. Willard did like the level of enthusiasm seen out on the court, and even on day-one, it was apparent the Lady Rams are ready to mix it up with someone besides themselves.

Mineral Wells will host Dublin for its first match of the season with the varsity scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
