Mineral Wells' Dakota Howard blocks a shot by a Bridgeport player during the Lady Rams' district-opening win over the Sissies on Friday. Mineral Wells heads into Friday's showdown with Lake Worth at 9-7 for the year and in first-place in the District 7-3A standings.

When Taylor Eggleston took the reigns of the Mineral Wells volleyball program, she said she expected the Lady Rams to compete this season. She also said her team shouldn't be counted out of the District 7-3A playoff chase.

Everyone is finding out real quickly, Eggleston wasn't kidding.

Mineral Wells heads into tonight's open date on its schedule two games above .500 for the season, and in sole possession of first place in the league standings.

Just how good has Mineral Wells been recently. Consider this: keyed by the offensive attack of Shelby Simonton, Dakota Howard and Cora Jenkins, the Lady Rams have won three straight matches, including a 3-0 sweep of Bridgeport Friday in their district opener.

Prior to bouncing Bridgeport, Mineral Wells had defeated Alvarado and Brownwood.

Overall, the MWHS girls have won four of their last five outings. Their only loss in that span was a 3-1 loss to Peaster.

Mineral Wells will return to action on Friday when they travel to Lake Worth. The MWHS varsity will begin play at 5 p.m.
