Mineral Wells overcame some physical adversity and foul weather as the Rams pounded out a 2-1 road win over WF Hirschi in soccer action Tuesday.
The Rams played a strong first half with Jared Valle punching in a left-footed shot over the Hirschi goalkeeper's head to take a 1-0 lead.
It was miserable soccer with both rain and sleet at times.
Julian Avila made it a 2-0 game when he laced a 35-yard free-kick over the defensive wall and through goalkeeper’s legs.
“It was a physical game,” Coach Rolando Borjon said, “Hirschi did an excellent job pressing and keeping us on our toes.”
Things got rougher in the second half as Hirschi came out to score a quick goal just two minutes into play; however, the Huskie players were carded several times, which eventually led to ejections.
“The second half has been a bit of a struggle for us, and we tend to come out too flat and last night, it hurt us because they scored on us so quick,” Borjon said.
The Rams were able to keep the Huskies at bay but Hirschi still provided a match.
“They managed to put pressure on us,” Borjon said. “We need to do a better job in those situations and not get overconfident and sloppy with our passing. Overall, the boys are doing a great job of clicking together!”
