The March 22, 2001 edition’s featured a front-page picture of Lady Rams state powerlifting champion Amber Mahan as she made her deadlift at the state meet in Killeen. Mahan set four school records en route to her state title in the 114-pound class.
Mahan’s lift total of 670 set the school mark for total pounds as did her 270-pound squat, 110-pound bench press and a 295-pound deadlift.
Mahan had three of her teammates qualify for the state meet including, Tootie Barton, Courtney Temple, and Ci Ci Walker, who also set a school record with a 320-pound deadlift in the 148-pound class.
In local bowling action at the Mountaineer Lanes, Machelle Hanchey (213 high-game) and Sharon Morris (562-series) were in black and white print for their games on the polished lanes. Willie Ware was tearing up the men’s side with a high game of 255 and a series high of 632.
Long-time and present Mineral Wells High School track and field Coach Jackie Harvey was getting his charges ready for the Angelo Relays, and the Lady Hawk Relays in Fort Worth.
“It’s always a great meet. We are looking forward to the relays, all of our kids have been getting and better each week,” Harvey said.
A few days later, Dee Dee Eichelberger and Erica Roberson would prove Harvey right as they finished first and second for a time of 13.69 and 14.00 seconds in the 100 meters. Amanda Gatlin won the 200-meters with a clocking of 29.25 while Mimi Green was second with a 30.13 time.
