Junior Joshua Guzman scored the 1,000th point of his career, and Community Christian School rode his 35-point explosion against Joshua Christian to a 63-58 win.
The victory put the Warriors (15-9) into the driver’s seat in TCAF D2 District 1, where they will next face Granbury’s Cornerstone Academy in Mineral Wells Friday.
Against Joshua, the Warriors started slow and trailed 7-1 before Coach Brian Rodricks called a timeout and got CCS back on track with a 14-3 run to lead 15-10 heading into the second quarter.
Guzman was already on track for a big night with 12 of the Warriors' first-quarter points. The junior recorded his 1,000th point on a free throw and play was stopped to recognize the accomplishment and to present Guzman with a signature basketball.
The good feelings propelled the Warriors’ offense to a 38-22 lead at the half, but play was far from over as Granbury mounted a fourth-quarter charge with a 15-6 run.
The Warriors hot shooters went cold during the stretch, and Granbury pulled close at 61-58 before CCS sealed the game with free throws, including the final two by Guzman.
Jackson Horton was second on the Warriors’ roster in scoring with 15 points while Luke Knowles had five and Ethan Hobson and Bryce Haralson had four points each.
