Coach Sheridan Willard is still tinkering with her Lady Rams’ offense as Mineral Wells prepares for a four-game road stretch over the next week.
Freshman setter Sidney Dow is suddenly on the radar after serving up eight straight points against Miller Grove in the Lady Blues’ tournament in Graham last weekend.
“Sidney crushed it,” Willard said. “She got us back into it in the third set.”
Trailing 24-17, Dow served up a victory for Mineral Wells with great placement of the ball, and she added another look to the Lady Rams’ offensive attack, which needs more smoke and mirrors to fool defenses.
The Lady Rams also looked good against Abilene High as they lost in three sets and dropped a heartbreak in the third 25-22.
“We didn’t play well Saturday,” Willard said. “That might be due to our changing the rotation so we can find what works.”
Setter Taylor Gary had a good tournament with three games with 12 or more assists including two game of 16 each. Against Abilene, Kenzie Lawhon had a match-high 14 digs while Paige Riney led that department against Midland Greenward with 10 and she also had three aces against Miller Grove.
Mineral Wells served up nine aces against Abilene High with Jessie Ishmael leading the way with three, Dow and Megan Waldrum had two aces each.
“We’re still trying to find the right rotations. We need to attack the net and run the kind of offense it takes to win games,” Willard said. “The girls are working hard to make the adjustments I ask of them.”
There is no reason for Willard to panic as she continues to see improvement from the Lady Rams who are working at becoming more deceptive with their offense. Straight-up setting won’t work in district play where state-ranked (19th) Stephenville is waiting in the wings.
“Our communication and offensive setups are getting better with each game we play,” Willard said.
